Impact of Slavery on a Child
Effect of Slavery on a Child Life of a Slave Child It is difficult to envision experiencing childhood in the slave period. With the extravagances that even the most unfortunate of youngsters have in current occasions, makes the existence a slave kid considerably progressively unimaginable no doubt. A kid that grew up as a slave endured a merciless, brutal adolescence on various levels. Not exclusively was the enduring physical it was likewise mental. The mental far exceeding the physical, as I would like to think. From birth as far as possible of numerous slaves lives, they frequently felt frail, substandard, disgrace, and maybe the most harming mental impact was the feeling of not having family ties and dreading partition from family. Truly, slave kids experienced physical work at youthful ages, poor nourishment and sanitation. As a rule this conditions lead to numerous genuine if not deadly sicknesses. Slave youngsters were esteemed resources for slave proprietors and were given a money related worth and keeping in mind that some y outhful little child matured kids lived in the bosses homes, there lives were a long way from sumptuous. Little child matured youngsters were frequently considered answerable for dealing with newborn child offspring of the ace. As they got more seasoned, they were liable for household tasks, for example, housekeeping, fanning their lords, cooking, and so on and in the end were sent to the fields to function as youthful young people. Experiencing childhood during the 1990s and mid 2000s this world appears to be so distant from what I at any point knew as a youngster. During play, slave youngsters would make games that would assist them with managing their environmental factors. They needed to feel they had some power over the things that were going on around them and show them how to be grown-ups. Games, for example, Hide the Switch and Auction were only a few the games slave kids played to set them up for the real beating or selling of a relative. They additionally didn't have made toys. They would make balls to play with out of yarn and old socks. Games additionally were utilized as learning apparatuses for slave kids that were denied of training. For instance, Hide and Seek was utilized to figure out how to tally. A few different games were utilized to upgrade verbal utilization and ring games were a method for arrival of feelings a youngster might be feeling by permitting them to make rhythms. Slave youngsters frequently chased and angled as serious games, which likewise permitted them to make their families somewhat happier, they would in ge neral avoid games that necessary somebody to lose. More established kids would be on watch to inform the more youthful kids that an ace was drawing nearer by singing a tune. This is additionally something kids in current occasions do, they pay special mind to somebody of power coming however the jobs are turned around, the more youthful kids are typically the one keeping an eye out. Slave youngsters anticipated having the option to work in the fields. They were around then permitted to get a portion of indistinguishable advantages from the grown-ups, for example, apportions of nourishment and all the more apparel. This generally occurred at around the age twelve. Once more, it is difficult to picture as an offspring of twelve that I needed to go work to get a full supper or garments. At twelve, my folks ensured that I would be advised to garments than them and was never denied nourishment when I was eager. In addition to the fact that it was hard being a youngster during the slave period, it was as similarly hard, if not harder, being a parent. While in todays world turning into a parent, paying little mind to age, is perhaps the best snapshot of your life that was not the situation with slave guardians. Slave guardians would convey their youngsters with ambivalent feeling as they realized what testimonial lay in hold up of their kids. This was particularly the situation with female youngsters. Female kids were explicitly abused beginning as a youthful age. The rapes truly were ruthless, also the passionate and mental impacts rapes had on female slaves. Kids that were imagined in the way of rape by slave drivers and considered mulatto were abused on a completely unexpected level in comparison to other slave kids and were no doubt isolated from their moms on the grounds that the special lady of the ranch didnt need them around. Fathers made some hard memories managing having the option to shield their families from the brutality encompassing them. At the point when a dad attempted to secure his youngsters, they or he was offered to an alternate ranch, so with an end goal to keep his family together he would hold on and watch shameful acts done to his family. As I would like to think, having the option to keep his self-restraint in specific circumstances made him a superior dad than by not keeping his self-control. Slave proprietors in support of working pregnant ladies in the field and bringing down their proportions of nourishment where in reality one of the most compelling motivation that the slave kid ethical quality rate was so high. I don't accept that slave proprietors really felt that tilling the ground really made conveyance of a kid simpler nor do I accept they thought not taking care of the mother would bring down birth weight of the kid. It has frequently been said that kids were versatile and this is demonstrated again and again with slave kids. Youngsters naturally introduced to servitude figured out how to manage there conditions on away no other kid has ever needed to do. They transcended these offenses by figuring out how to peruse and compose, learning racial behavior, assuming individual liability for themselves and looking to a higher capacity to end their torment. At the beginning of the Civil War, ladies and kids slaves looked for asylum with the Union while young men as youthful as ten joined the military to battle in the war. Others, for example, Frederick Douglas got away from subjection, got taught, and battled for privileges of slaves on a national level. The loathe subjugation created between dark slaves and white slave proprietors more than 150 years back was so I place that considerably following 150 years have passed it is as yet one of the reasons for racial strain on the planet today.

Causes and Contributing Factors of Standardized Testing - Free Essay Example
Standardized test taking has become the norm in the education system. In the 20th century, standardized tests were invented to improve schools, teacher practices, and educational methods. Unfortunately, it has contributed to severe dilemmas in the students education process. Standardized testing is a cause of limited student learning, biased teaching, and a contributing cause to the diminishing health of students. Standardized testing is the cause of limited student learning. The tests given only explore cognitive abilities, neglecting the other qualities that are essential to the student. Research proves that GED recipients score about the same as traditional high school students on the standardized test. While they are alike in that they generally obtain the same score, they also differ. GED recipients often lack basic qualities, such as curiosity and perseverance (How Standardized Tests Shape and Limit Student Learning). English and language arts (ELA) teachers could help students develop these non-cognitive skills that are essential to the learning process if they werent mandated to focus so largely on testing drills. Instead, teachers are forced to limit opportunities, eliminating the curiosity developmental aspect. They also have to cut back on large scale projects, which help to develop perseverance (How Standardized Tests Shape and Limit Student Learning). According to a report publish ed in 2013 by the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), students can spend over 110 hours per year doing test prep and as many as 50 hours per year taking the test themselves. This means children dedicate roughly 15% of instructional time on preparing for and taking the standardized test (The Case Against Standardized Testing). Standardized testing is the cause of biased teaching. Standardized testing has become the single and most important indicator of a schools performance. Unfortunately, quality in the public school classroom correlates with high test scores and what determines a good teacher is his or her ability to raise the scores of students taking the standardized test. A writer for the New York Times and high school English teacher, Mercedes Schneider, proves this to be true. She admits to being fearful of losing her job as a teacher if she didnt conform to the guidelines concerning the time being dedicated to standardized testing. At the end of the school year she was evaluated by a school administrator. The evaluation is based on two things: classroom observation and the results of her students testing scores. Although the evaluation is supposed to be equally based on those two aspects, poor student testing performance can and will override a positive administration observation, resulting in the teachers termination (Schneider). Standardized testing is a contributing cause to the diminishing health of students. Researchers discovered that elementary school students experience greater test anxiety on a standardized test in comparison to the regular classroom test. They hypothesized that one of the contributing factors may be the amount of emphasis educators put on the importance of doing well on these tests (Segool et. al). Although low scores come with consequences for the student, the majority of children feel pressured and stressed because they are aware that the score they receive will impact their teachers and administrators. A study of childrensperception of standardized test taking was conducted in 2012. It showed that even students in third grade understand the consequences of receiving a low grade on the standardized test (Dutro and Selland). A survey conducted by the Northwest Evaluation Association in 2014 reported that 55% of students believed that the purpose of standardized tests was to evaluate their schools (10). Elementary school students in El Paso, Texas were asked what, and if any, fears they had surrounding the standardized test. One student stated, Your teacher will feel bad because you didnt try. She gets paid for teaching you. She wants her boss to see what a good teacher she is but if you dont try, her boss wont know what a good teacher she is, (Strauss). The answer given by that student also shows that the consequences faced by educators and administration members directly and negatively affect the student. Prior to the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) act, a plethora of professionals that directly deal with children on a regular basis (child psychiatrists, teachers, and pediatricians), signed a statement that advised against additional standardized testing that NCLB would require (Rethink High-Stakes Testing). The statement claimed that requiring more testing would negatively impact students health. A school nurse and former board member of the National Association of School Nurses, took notice to this immediately. After NCLB was implemented and the additional testing began, she witnessed an unusual increase of students who came to her with symptoms that align with anxiety. The symptoms cited included headaches, insomnia, depression, vomiting, and poor attendance (Rethink High-Stakes Testing). There is evidence to prove that stress-related issues experienced by students are not getting better but unfortunately worsening. The New York State School Board Association reported that 61% of respo nding school psychologists in New York claim that since Common Core standards wereintegrated, the levels of test anxiety has risen drastically (Heiser et. al). A pediatrician in Florida stated that she experienced an increase of patients with stress-related issues around the time of testing. She believes the impact of standardized testing has worsened within the past 20 years specifically, in the past five to eight years (Thompson) which suggests that additional testing was the cause of this. A director of testing and accountability in North Carolina reported to the American School Board Journal that, administrators discard as many as 20 exam books a day because children vomit on them, (Toppo). In fact, vomiting during testing is so common that teachers and administrators are given guidelines on what to do in the event a student vomits on their test and/or answer sheet. The test coordinator provided by the Partnership for Assessment and Readiness for College Careers (PARCC) proves t his. The teachers are instructed to, put the soiled test into a resealable, plastic bag and if possible, transcribe the responses into a replacement document, (Archived Testing Manuals). Although standardized testing is beneficial for gathering information to better assess schools in America, the students are suffering for it. Research proves and will continue to prove that standardized testing is a cause of limited student learning, biased teaching, and a contributing cause to the diminishing health of students.

Our Nation s Criminal Justice System - 934 Words
There are many problems that our nationââ¬â¢s criminal justice system has but among the many there are some that stand out to me more than others. Our nation has always been biased in favor of men. Women used to be considered property of their husband. Yes, we havenââ¬â¢t always been equal but Iââ¬â¢d like to think that in the 21st century we are all equal. No matter the color of your skin, your sexual preference or even your gender everyone in some way is equal. Men and women have equal paying jobs, same sex marriage is legal and generally speaking both men and women have equal opportunities. But there are some things that arenââ¬â¢t equal when it comes to our Nations criminal justice system. Men and women commit acts of violence against each other. The way in which each particular situation is handled shouldnââ¬â¢t depend on the sex of the aggressor. Men are always thought of as the aggressor even prior to knowing the actual situation. Many people fail to realize the severity of Domestic Violence among men. In heterosexual relationships 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have been victims of some form of physical violence by intimate partner within their lifetime. Verbal, Psychological, and sexual abuse are all forms domestic Violence.
